WARNING: This tutorial may cause epileptic seisures and stress from the flashing lights of the MS-DOS screen posting colourful updates on the virus you'll be installing. It will also blow up your computer (and the rest of your town)... Have fun! tongue.gif

20% Bandwidth Trick

Microsoft reserves 20% of your available bandwidth for its own purposes (suspect for updates and interrogating your machine etc..) Heres how to get it back:

Click Start>Run>type gpedit.msc without the

This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:

Local Computer Policy>Computer Configuration>Administrative Templates>Network>QOS Packet Scheduler>Limit Reservable Bandwidth

Now it says it is not enabled but... It lies ohmy.gif

Enable it and set the nubmer to 0%

Dadaaa, you will have faster internet and lower ping hopefully.

UPDATE:

I thought that was it... But it isn't. Seems that there's one more thing you have to do to get 20-25% extra bandwidth...

Open your control panel. Open Administrative Tools. Double-Click 'Services'

Click 'Extended' at the bottom of the window. You'll now get a list of the services running on your PC. Scroll down to 'QoS RSVP' and double click to get another window with options for that service. Change the startup type to 'Disabled' and viola, faster PC and internet!

Uneeded processes.

Most people know how to do this but never bother. This, however can speed up your computer and internet alot more.

Just Right-Click your windows taskbar and click 'Task Manager'

OR

Hold Ctrl, Alt, Delete on you keyboard.

Now make sure your Task Manager is on the tab, 'Processes'

You might recognize some of this weird sh** instantly. This lists ALL your running proccesses. Some are useless, uneeded programs or half-components or w/e and some are critical for programs and your system so be careful!

If you right click one of the rows of gibberish you will see 'End Proccess' and 'End Proccess Tree'. All you need to do is fidure out which you want and which you dont. Remember, these start every time you start a program or restart your PC so dont worry about losing them. You can search for the process name in google to check up if they are ok to get rid of and, detect possible 'Virus Material'.

One last thing, there is a colum that says: User Name. This displays System, Network service and your user name on a regular computer.
If it says your user name then it's really is safe to end. Except explorer.exe maybe... Thats your windows xD although it can be easily restarted.

I've probably just made it sound confusing but I'll help you out by naming a few processes that no one really needs.

Process Name | What it is | End it? |

WLLoginProxy.exe | MSN thing, useless | YEAAAH! |
ctfmon.exe | Video card thing | No, coz it's unendable :-/
explorer.exe |Your desktop, taskbar and... Explorer! | Yea, if you know what you are doing...
samp.exe |SA Multiplayer, fool!| If you want to end it, do it.

My PC runs well with 25 Proccesses going. Some people have 40. If your one of those people... GTFO this server! Laggy fool! xD

Explorer.exe

Ahh crap, I missed payday! I hope your happy. Now, about the explorer.exe thing I mentioned a couple of times, last tutorial. This is a big proccess.

1. Now, I want you to open Task Maneger, right click explorer.exe and click 'End Proccess'. Go on, do it!

2. HAHHAAHHAAA! Okay, you'll see nothing but this thing your reading now if your following my tutorial step by step which I suggest you do if you ever want to see your Windows xP alive ever again. All you need to do is re open task manager (Ctrl + Alt + Delete)

3. Now, Ignore processes and sh**. Go to the corner and click: File > New Task (Run...)

4. In this new editable box, type explorer.exe (The name of the proccess you ended wink.gif )

5. Well I guess you will know what is about to happen now... BLIP! Everything is back to normal. Your desktop items are back, your start bar is back and My Documents and other places are accessible.

Now, what was the point of this? Well during the time of 'No Explorer' you may notice that your PC sped up. Unless you have a supercomputer. In that case, why are you reading this you greedy idiot!? So you can have this ended while you play San Andreas or do anything that usually slows your PC down. It may still do that, but not as much. Also, it's good to restart explorer.exe every once in a while. Because it can end up slowing down after a while of being active. Ever had your start menu have black over all the buttons until you hover over them? Then just restart explorer!

So...

1. Start SA-MP.
2. End that proccess (First part: Step 1-2)
3. Oh no! How do I get back to samp?
4. Press Alt+Tab to switch to your game smile.gif Happy days.

If Alt + Tab dont work, your f**ked. Nah, just kidding. Ctrl + Alt + Delete and switch from the processes tab to the 'Applications' tab. And click San Andreas. Now right click and click 'Switch to'. This however, leaves Task Manager open which doesn't use much memory but a bit of CPU so use if you have more CPU than RAM. Or test it out anyway and see the differences.

CCleaner

If you have never heard of or downloaded this program you are really missing out. You can see how much it helps when you first run it!

CCleaner (Formerly 'Crap Cleaner') is free to download. Type CCleaner in google and it should be the first result. Download and install it making sure you untick the unneeded 'Yahoo Bar' that it gives you the option to install.

After installing it and running it you will see a list of buttons down the side. These all help your PC in different ways. First though, you should see a list on the cleaner tab containing options and checkboxes. Most of these need deleting but if there is anything you dont want deleted, untick the option. Once your happy with the selection of unneeded files to delete, go down to 'Run Cleaner' and click it.

If you don't maintain your computer well, you will notice a long wait. Just keep waiting patiently. This program almost never crashes. After it's done you will see a report telling you the files that were deleted and how much space you earned.

So you have now gained disk space and uncluttered your HD a bit. So now to fix problems with registry. You'll see a blue box thing saying 'Registry' underneath. Click it and click 'Scan For Issues' making sure everything in the list is ticked.

It'll ask if you want to back up the registry. I suggest you do this time. But only back up the registry once a month and after 3 backups, delete the first one. I've got to a point in confidence where I never back up the registry coz i trust how accurate this program is. After everything is scanned you may notice a HUGE list of maybe over 100 issues. Issues are bad, you don't want them. Click 'Fix Issues' and then click 'Fix All'. Dadaaa! Issues resolved. You may need to run this a few more times to ensure that everything is fixed.

Last but certainly not least... Startup programs. CCleaner has a 'Tools' menu which offers you it's own better uninstall service and... Startup programs remover thiny. Click 'Startup'. You will see a few things that start up when your computer runs. You want as little of these as possible.

You can't disable/delete them all. I reccommend that anything you do want gone is Disabled, not deleted. If you dont know what to disable, look at the 'Program' collum. Choose one and search it in google. There is a 94% chance that the proccess will be described in the first 3 options. Click one to view what this program is, how important it is and how harmful it may be. This is like the unsung method of stopping viruses as well as speeding up your PC and stopping annoying things from showing up.

So act accordingly to what you know from the information. Try to get rid of as many as possible. But make sure you don't get rid of something needed.

More unneeded stuff!

Click 'Start', 'Run...' and type "msinfo" (Without the " " of course)

A window should pop up. Click the tab saying 'Services'. You will see a list of things. These are proccesses, just like the Task Manager ones. But some of these are hidden or come back after you end them.

First thing you'll want to do here is check 'Hide all microsoft services' because you really don't want to end some of these. In fact, the only endable one I found was a bluetooth helper, but that might be required for some people. Plus, it doesn't really use up much memory if it isn't switched on anyway...

After clicking you'll see less proccesses. You may notice things like AVG, MSN and other things... Try and disable as many as possible but be careful! Remember, you can always google these, just like with CCleaner.

This window also has a 'Startup' tab. It does the same thing as CCleaners startup options. Just untick the boxes to stop them running on startup...

After editing the settings, click either restart or exit without. And when your computer next restarts, it will be a bit faster smile.gif

TuneUp!

I've only recently discovered this program. Or rather, I found the site ages ago but was put of by the 'Enter your email here to download' which would end up giving you emails with annoying offers to their products. It's well worth it though... This can REALLY speed up your computer.

Just download it. Pretty simple to figure it out. Just search: TuneUp in Google and it should come first.

Services (Extended)

Open Control Panel and select Administrative Tools > Services.

Click 'Extended' at the bottom to get a list of services.

Again, you'll have to figure out what each one does via Google or brain-power!

Don't worry though! I have a little list of things that are okay to disable smile.gif To disable an option, just double-click it and change the 'Startup Type' to 'Disabled'

Ati HotKey Poller - If you do not need this and don't have an Ati video-card... You should be able to disable this safely.

Bluetooth Support Service - Not only will disabling this speed up your PC, it will protect it! Unless you're using a Bluetooth device with your PC, disable it.

Error Reporting Service - Do you ever actually send an error report when a program crashes? Probably not, so disable it!

Fast User Switching Compatibility - If you're the only user on your PC, then disable this.

Help and Support - It's the slowest running program ever! Disable this unless you actually use the Help and Support center.

Indexing Service - Disable. Especially if you hardly ever search for files. This is very unneeded and takes loads of memory!

NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing - Hardly anyone's ever used Remote Desktop. Disable it if you have no intention of doing.

Print Spooler - Disable unless you print alot. This service just speeds up printing sometimes. Pretty useless.

Remote Registry - If you don't want hackers changing stuff on your computer... Disable this immediately! It allows remote access to your registry.

Security Center - All this does is tells you if you've got updates, anti-virusses and firewalls. I'd disable it. But keep it if you want...

Server - This let's you print over a network. If you don't have a printer or aren't on a network. There's not much need for this. I am, however :yup:

Telnet - I'm sure this is disabled by default. But if enabled... Disable it! It lets people access your PC from another computer and run files.

Uninterruptible Power Supply - If you have one, don't disable this. But not many people have one. I'm tryna get one. But until then, I'd disable it smile.gif

Regional and Language Options

... Are very unneeded.

Control Panel > Regional.... ect.

Select the 'Languages' tab. Click 'Details...'

On the new window, click the Advanced tab.

Now, check the thing that says: "Turn off advanced text services"

All it is; is speech recognition and stuff. Stuff that's not needed!!

This is old but im still using xp, so...

CTFMON.EXE is not a Video Card thing. Its needed for changing the Keybord layout from f.e. DE to EN.
You should leave it allone if using MS-Office as i remember. Otherwise you can only disable it by replacing it with a dummy by some tools (F.e. TweakXP).

I think MSINFO is for real MSCONFIG...

I will try to kill the explorer process when running a game cause my PC is crappy.

Yes, is it possible to change services with MSINFO?

I normaly use SERVICES.MSC or MSCONFIG.EXE to change services.
By the way, my XP gives me an error message when trying to 'run' MSINFO.

Hmm, same as Windows 7, also errors. It's got to be something related though: On System Information you can't change services, no, only on Services.msc.

In MSCONFIG you can deaktivate services for comming boot ups (there is also an 'Hide all microsoft services' checkbox; this is why i meant it might not be MSINFO)
and 'AutoRuns' (right next to 'Services' should be 'System start' or something).

However, i think services should not be managed due to MSCONFIG rather than SERVICES.MSC because if you deaktivated an service in MSCONFIG, you might be wondering why it isn't starting when trying to aktivate it in SERVICES.MSC and you have already forgotten about your MSCONFIG settings... but its your choice.

I would try to disable the 'Start at bootup' setting for any program in its optins first.
To trash the registry a little less. If not possible, i think MSCONFIG is OK for that.

Ahh...

I meant MSINFO might be spelled wrong accidentally and Deji meant for real MSCONFIG.

AutoRuns is a program. Look it up. One of the best startup programs.

It will find more startup entries than CCleaner and MSConfig combined.

Ah, yes. I know this one. It is eaven possible to deaktivate shellextensions (f.e. Win MediaPlayer stuff which i dont use).
Pretty nice one. But you need to keep it in case you wanna aktivate stuff again.. (reinstall AutoRuns wouldnt help)
