Outside Raccoon City exists a top secret genetic research facility station called the Hive, owned by the Umbrella Corporation. A thief steals vials of the genetically engineered T-virus, and contaminates the Hive with it as a distraction for his escape. The contamination causes the facility's artificial intelligence, the Red Queen, to seal the Hive and kill everyone inside .
Alice awakens in a deserted mansion with amnesia. She finds Matt , next to her. A group of commandos break into the mansion, and take them to an underground train station beneath the mansion, which is the emergency entrance to the Hive. At the station, the group discovers Spence, also suffering from amnesia. The head of the commandos, "One", explains that everyone in the group, except Matt, is an employee of the Umbrella Corporation, with Spence and Alice guarding the Hive entrance under the disguise of a couple living in the mansion. The Red Queen released a nerve gas in the mansion that caused their amnesia. The commando team does not know what caused the Red Queen to seal the facility.
